Parents are the first and most essential connection in their own child's life, but it's also very important that parents be that other "caring adult" in the lives of other children. There is powerful evidence that it is through relationships with caring adults that young people build the strengths, skills and resilience they need to become caring, healthy adults.
It's easy! Connect with Kids. You can make a difference!
- Welcome your child's friends into your home and get to know them- sometimes teenagers find it easier to talk with their friends' parents than their own.
- Be a good role model for children. And remember, they are always watching and listening.
- Take the time to laugh and play and just have fun with children and teens.
- Need someone to take care of a pet or water the flowers while you're away? Ask a young person to help you out.
- Support your children's friends by occasionally attending one of their performances or sports events.
- Encourage and support your children's relationships with adult friends, neighbors and family.
- Get to know your children's friends' parents - you can be a support for each other and all your children.
- Make a special effort to talk with children at social events at your place of worship.
